What's the bet that these will become the new screens of choice in the near future, with everything from pictures hanging on the walls, large advertising billboards, books, magazines and papers, computer and TV screens using this technology. In 2 years or less.

Cheap, paper-thin TV screens that can be used in newspapers and magazines have been unveiled by German electronics giant Siemens.

The firm says the low production costs could see the magazine shelves in newsagents come alive with moving images vying for the customers' attention as they move along the aisle.

Oh my lack-of-god! Words fail me. Pimply hormone-raging teenagers hiding their throbbing pr0n mags behind their textbooks, the old Aqualung geezer next to you on the bus grinning into his newspaper -- I did not need those images in my brain.

Semi-serious comment: the new display tech could really help other display technologies. If what differentiates your product from the really cheap product is image quality, then you're going to start thinking pretty seriously about image quality.

Thanks Bob. You expose another viewpoint I hadn't noticed. (I love this aspect of LJ.) I'd felt it was the end of the expensive displays, but of course that isn't necessarily so. As you point out it could simply mean a leap in quality to justify spending the extra bucks. Could it be what is needed to push us into 3d display. We have the vast amounts of cheap RAM, disk storage, and cpu power required; this might tip the scales for the actual display end.

It needn't be that expensive. If it needs to be really nice and really cheap, that ain't nothin' but two more engineering requirements, and the people that solve that problem get rich. Well, actually the insurance companies and day traders who trade the shares get rich and the engineers get chicken feed, but still.
