Project Gutenberg is 35 years old

In that period thousands of volunteers around the world have digitised about 100,000 books which are distributed free (via the net or CD or DVD) to everybody who wants them. It continues to accelerate, now adding about 100 books per week to the free library.
No government could do it. No commercial entity could do it.
In fact both have actively worked against such efforts.
This is a perfect example of how human goodwill can dwarf ordinary greed-based institutions.
