End of Galileo
Sep. 22nd, 2003 11:08 amThe Galileo robotic spacecraft has ended in a planned fiery descent into Jupiter's atmosphere.
It was an incredibly successful mission, launched way back in 1989, it actually lasted 6 years beyond its intended lifespan and continued to work in spite of exposure to 4 times the radiation it was designed to survive. (Engineers are just the coolest people!)
Galileo extensively studied the asteroids, comet Shoemaker-Levy, Jupiter and the many moons of Jupiter, including Europa and Callisto, which we now think might support life.
