It is like a textbook case of the original (in)famous Stanford Prison Experiment by Professor Philip Zimbardo. Back in 1971 he was interested to find out "what happens when good people are put into an evil place, do they triumph or does the situation come to dominate their past history and morality?" He set up a simple experiment where mock prisoners were guarded by mock guards. Unfortunately the experimant, which was supposed to run for 2 weeks had to be terminated after just 6 days because conditions became horrific so rapidly.
