I read a beautiful, short, illustrated book last night. It was written almost a hundred years ago, in 1913, by Maurice Maeterlinck and translated into English by Alexander Teixeira De Mattos. The gorgeous illustrations are by Cecil Alden. It amazes me how many talented people this world produces. Most of them drift inexorably into obscurity. I hadn't heard of any of these people before (though I should have known about Alexander Teixeira De Mattos -- the person who translated a number of Jean-Henri Fabre's works).

Back to that lovely book "Our Friend the Dog". It brought tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat in its description of the bond between human and dog. Some passages were slightly wrong of course, being colored by the time in which they were written, but on the whole I have to say it is one of the sweetest things I've read.

You can download the book from Project Gutenberg for free.

Make sure you get the illustrated copy (the html version), not the purely text version.
