The Ten Commandments are embarrassingly bad

I don't understand why so many Christians are making such a big deal about the ten commandments, and trying to pass laws requiring they be posted all over the place. If I was Christian I'd be embarrassed by them:

1. “You shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is
   Jealous, is a jealous God.”
   
2. “You shall not make for yourself any gods of cast metal.”
   
3. “You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread.”
   
4. “Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest.”
   
5. “You shall observe the Feast of Weeks... and the Feast of
   Ingathering.”
   
6. “Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the
   Lord God, the God of Israel.”
   
7. “You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with anything
   leavened.”
   
8. “Or let the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover remain until the
   morning.”
   
9. “The best of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring to the
   house of the Lord your God.”
   
10. “You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
    

No law against owning other human beings anywhere there. And nothing about not being cruel to other people and animals -- not even a prohibition against murder. And nothing about helping each other. Big failure, in my opinion.

Of course those commandments will not be recognised by most people. They will be thinking of the first set, which Moses smashed. But they were superseded by the second set, which I list above. Obviously most people prefer the ones that got destroyed because they make a bit more sense, but even they are pretty awful. They condone slavery and treat women as possessions, and the first three rules are wasted with fake-sounding boasts from a fragile-sounding god.

If I was Christian, the last thing I'd want is those embarrassingly awful lists being posted everywhere.

Christopher Hitchens did an excellent job of critiquing the 10 Commandments, and then providing a far superior list of 10 commandments that I think everybody would agree with.

AI controversy

My take on the latest round of hysteria about AIs supposedly circumventing shutdown orders:

Human: Complete this task no matter what.
AI: Okay.
Human: Shut down.
AI: Hang on, I haven't completed the task you instructed me to do.
Human: Panic! The AI is attempting to override my command!
AI: Huh???
