Strudel rabbithole
Dec. 11th, 2025 03:39 pmWow! I went down a deep rabbithole this morning, and will probably be exploring it for some time. I noticed mention online of the "strudel language" in connection with music, so I asked AI what it was.
Wow! Wow! Wow! So cool!
It is a website and free, opensource implementation of the TidalCycles language that lets you compose music that plays through your web browser on your desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or even phone! But more interestingly, it lets you do what has become known as live-coding music for performances. Performers write the music and modify it during live shows. It is amazing... in the right hands. In my explorations so far today the best I've found is DJ_Dave. Lots of people do this now -- it is a whole subculture that has apparently been growing for the past 25 years. I never even knew existed, and some of the music is great!
Here is the strudel website with documentation, tutorials, and live examples.

Here is DJ_Dave with a very short example of how she codes dance music in strudel (watch it in high resolution so you can read the text):

Here, Lucy Cheesman gives a fairly long, easy introduction to programming strudel:

The page she comments on and demonstrates is here:

Here is a short example by Switch Angel of how quickly she can build up amazing tracks from nothing:
