transferring from LJ

Gee, it's taking a long time to copy over all my LiveJournal entries to Dreamwidth.

I shouldn't be too surprised, considering I have about a decade of LJ stuff to copy, but I have to say, I'm getting a little worried that it seems to have stalled at 2003 for the last several days... perhaps longer.

Here's hoping it is just that large numbers of people are bogging the process down by all fleeing LJ at the same time.

Mine from 2002 took me less than an hour.

Hmmm. Thanks. Looks like I need to restart the copy process. It must have aborted prematurely for some reason.

Yep, it's safe to re-run as often as you like. Do it regularly if you plan to leave comments open - it will quietly re-import new comments without screwing anything up.

Damn. It doesn't seem to be doing it. It gets about 120 posts, to as far as 19th June 2003 (my first post at LJ was 13th July 2002) and then fails. I tried it with comments and without. Sometimes it gets a few posts further, but fails again. The fact that it sometimes gets a little further indicates it is probably not choking on any particular post. I wonder what is happening. The import status page reports:
Journal entries   Failed as of 33 minutes ago

All other lines are fine, except the comments line (when I tell it to retrieve them) which says it is still waiting for entries to finish, which makes sense.

Has me puzzled. I can't see how I could be doing anything wrong.

Could be an issue on LJ's end, or possibly something to do with the text encoding, or something else weird.

Aha! Thanks for the link to the FAQ. (I'm an idiot. I didn't think of checking that. Doh!) You're right, it is the encoding. I didn't realise Dreamwidth had been sending me messages (they haven't been getting emailed to me) which told me of the problem. The FAQ links to the inbox.

So it looks like some of my old LJ postings are prior to the change over to unicode. I'll have to fix them by hand as they pop up. No probs. Weird that it later failed at a different post.
