This is amazing!
It has been many years since I attempted to read the bible. I didn't make it all the way through. Many times later I'd gone back to read various parts. I've always been impressed by the utter insanity of the bible and that people can believe in it is a constant source of bewilderment to me. The Annotated Bible helps you to get a grip on the incredible depths of absurdity that it plunges to. It correlates contradictions and notes brutalities and injustices.

This site is an utter gem. I hope it helps to save us from the irrationality driving "christian" society these days.

The bible is a truly terrible piece of work. If someone tried to publish such a piece now they would be hounded by exactly those who call themselves "good christians". It is a book of contradiction, injustice, absurdities, cruelty, intolerance, often insulting to women and minority groups. It is full of sex and violence. In fact the way it portrays its god would be deeply insulting to a sane deity; it is written as being jealous, scheming, unjust, hateful, temperamental, and given to unprovoked viciousness.

Indeed. I spent a while in a community discussing Christianity with a lot of Bible-beaters....*shakes head* I can't believe how some of those people could be such dolts.........and even granting them the excuse of blind faith and idiocy, some of their beliefs were inexcusable.....I eventually left because I inevitably becaem frustrated with the mindlessly dogmatic hordes of Christian dupes. The worst part is that they seek to judge people based on an ancient book of mythology. I wanted to rip the throat out of every craphead who claimed that such-and-such was a sin........because the Bible said so.

I hate this religion so much, it's crazy.

They certainly can be a weird mob.

Here is an interesting tale that illustrates just how compartmentalised the christian mind can sometimes be.

A while back I was invited to a small party at my ex-girlfriend's place hosted by her and her then-girlfriend, Pippa, who is a full-on, crazy christian. At one point she was saying to a few of us at the table that the biggest danger of the future would be the moslems. (This was well before the Sept 11 thing.)

I thought this was weird and said in a gentle and reasonable voice, "Hang on... it would seem the christians are a much greater threat. For instance the people doing all the mass-murdering in the Balkans were the christians. They were killing off the moslems and putting them in concentration camps."

She became very upset with me, obviously stuck for a moment. With a bit of hand-waving she explained it away as that being a war about land, not religion.

I was puzzled and asked if it was alright for christians to commit genocide for land then. But I knew there would be no resolution to this so, for Margaret's sake, I dropped the subject.

For that sin Pippa insisted that I never be allowed to eat at the table with them again. She and Margaret later split up (Pippa had been going out with other women while on with Margaret, but somehow still blamed Margaret for the split). I am still friends with Margaret. She has a much nicer and gentler, buddhist girlfriend these days.

Hey Mims,

oh my my you do like to open up a can-o-worms now don't you.
I've read better Books (those begets were tough). How ever this book contains what every good book should have Sex and Violence. It also contains other good book reading for the mystery reader, it makes a good Who dun it..course we all know it was the romans...
it has elements for the racist/bigot.
How can you decry a book that contains everything for everyone? It is a well rounded book. Depending on what section/paragraph you pick you can ether defend or deny your position on what ever you like and still be quoting the bible
What other book is read around the world in such an unending way? even you whom professes to dislike religion are what... reading the bible and quoting to defend/deny your position..

any way Mims this is all in fun for me was just poking at ya. What i really think is...

Read what ever you like, believe what ever gets you threw the day, and
treat each other well..
don't pick your nose in public..
share your toys..

huggs to you with special smooch cause i teased you so bad...

Jenna

Heheheheh Image

You mentioned the whodunnit aspect. That is an interesting one. People commonly say it was the Romans, but in actual fact the poor guy was crucified by the church. The Romans didn't really want any part in it, but they were the law enforcers and had to do the bidding of the local church priests who insisted in killing him.

It is weird that this damnable book has ended up all around the world. What is stranger is how few christians actually do read the bible. If more christians did read it then they might find their faith a bit more difficult to defend.

Heheheh :) You make a good point that it is odd that someone as anti-religion as I am would read the bible.

Your rules are great ones. I wish more people followed them (though I'm not sure about the 'believe in whatever gets you through the day' suggestion).

I don't mind teasing from you sweetie. :)
