Being something of a geek I get the Harrow Technology Report emailed to me regularly. It is a wonderful read and its audience doesn't just consist of geeks; anybody interested in where this merry ride is taking us will find something of interest in there. He covers medical breakthroughs, computers, nanotechnology, and all manner of things... and it is free! (It is also downloadable or streaming as mp3 for those that like to let their ears do the reading.)

The latest issue (you can find it on the net at http://www.theharrowgroup.com/articles/20030825/20030825.htm has a neat item about an ethernet connection which looks like any other ethernet jack (the image below is bigger than actual size)

but contains all the circuitry of an entire ethernet card... not only that, it also has a built in web server!

Ta for that.
Neat website (I had to subscribe!) and neat device.
It reminds me of something I saw in a trade mag about the type of power-sockets used in PCs and other electric/electronic equipment. It was slightly longer/boxier than a normal socket, but it had a miniaturised power-filter, etc built-in, which effectively did-away with surge-protection/filtering and the guts of the traditional PC power-supply.

This ethernet thing is a big step up from that. :)
