Project Gutenberg
Sep. 11th, 2003 10:14 amProject Gutenberg was begun by Michael Hart more than 30 years ago when he realised that we risked becoming a world of information-rich and information-poor with an increasingly deep chasm separating the two. He decided that there should be a way of making literature available to all the world and took up the challenge himself. Since then so many people have been inspired by this noble aim that volunteers have converted almost 10,000 books to electronic form. These are mostly books whose copyrights have expired, but some have been donated by their authors.
The project is run on a shoestring and is in constant need of funds to pay for their few staff. Donate a dollar to them and make the world a more equitable (and safer) place and ensure you have a steady stream of free books to read into the forseeable future. Even I can afford a dollar!
