lucky dogs

How I wish I had one aspect of the dogs!
I envy them their easy talent for unconditional love. Love comes so hard to us -- we really have to work at it. I don't mean that first raw flash and surge of love -- the infatuation. That part is wonderfully, deliciously easy. I wish I could do the effortlessly total devotion for years on end. Have you seen them? They lie by you and just knowing that you are there is enough; it completes their world. They heave a sweet sigh suffused with pleasure.

But we poor humans have this meanness in us that we have to work so damn hard to curb: "Oh, I hate it when you do that," when 'that' would have been a cute and becoming trait when we were in full flush of love's bloom. We have to try to understand, and grit our teeth to contact that becomes abrasive... closing off the darkening eyes; diverting attention; forcing politeness... difficult, but it must be done because it can pay great dividends. That flash can be recaptured from time to time -- rippling electric blue pleasure that spreads through me at her touch. And then it has an extra dimension: the understanding that she tries too and wants to maintain the bond also.
