Another couple of useful tools for cinematographers are the flashback and the voiceover. The flashback can show viewers something of the character's past or their emotional state. The voiceover can expose the character's thoughts for the viewer. How do you make these available to viewers in machinima viewed inside 3d worlds? It is actually pretty straightforward. The viewer can wander around a 3d world at will or can attach themselves to one of possibly several director's "cameras". If the viewer attaches their viewpoint to a particular character then they are effectively inside that person's head, so see that character's flashbacks and hear their voiceover. If they attach to a different character then they hear and see that character's voiceover and flashbacks.

Can you see how incredibly powerful machinima can potentially be?

Cool! I wonder what is the best way for me to see it... short of flying to the other side of the planet of course. :)
