This cool machine is photographing the geography in incredible detail. The first test pictures from about 2 and a half thousand kilometers above the surface resolved objects down to about 2.5 meters per pixel. Soon it will take pictures from much closer -- about a 9th the distance away (280 km) and will see objects as small as 28 cm across -- that is less than a foot in size!!

The orbiter is not just taking amazing pictures though, it is also using radar that can see some way into the ground in order to build up an idea of what the geology of Mars is like. Presumably if there are any underwater bodies of ice it may show them.

Exciting times ahead!

That's really cool, Mars is such an interesting planet. Not too far in the future, (if the human race can get over itself and put some effort back into the space project) we may even have people up there.
