In about 5 hours there will be an online rally to try to save the TV show Angel. There will also be a real life rally in Burbank, USA. I'll try to make it to the online one.

I have sent some emails to people involved in the TV industry to voice my concern about a gradual trend to dumb down TV. Here is what I wrote:
There seems to be pressure from TV executives to produce only low-cost, unadventurous shows. Anything that diverges from their simple formula is quickly and unceremoniously dropped. So long as strict adherance to the bottom line is the rule we can expect TV to gradually degrade in quality. Shows such as Angel, Firefly, Duckman, Earth 2, Farscape, Invader Zim, Kindred the Embraced, Roswell, Dead Last, Dark Angel, The Lone Gunmen, and many more that explore less well-trod paths will always have a battle for airspace. The thing that is most discouraging is that there are more eyeballs than ever watching TV so the executives are not interested in raw numbers; just ratios. A show could have a larger audience than "I Love Lucy" did and it would still get cut if it didn't capture a large *proportion* of the market and cost a negligible amount of money to make. It is about greatest money from least effort.

Don't turn the TV scene into something like Italy's impoverished airwaves where game shows and sport are the only things on air.

What kind of message are we sending to new generations of writers when we say that creativity is not valued? What kind of TV will future generations have as a result?

If you value your place in a diverse TV workforce please help to save Angel... and all the other cool, crazy, innovative shows that face the axe just by being unusual.

The worldwide online rally to save Angel kicks off in about another 5 hours. I and many other Australians intend to be there.
