old testament god

Been a long, long time since I read the bible. I recall it was a really gruelling process, with much of it absurd, tangential and repetitive in meaningless ways. But I'd forgotten how utterly monstrous the old testament god is. It is the most repellent and psychotic creature imaginable.

Why would anyone consider this document worthy of anything but a window into the madness of ancient humans? It is a cesspool of murder, hate, and genocide, often with the god supposedly instructing people to commit mass slaughter or doing it itself. It is just ridiculous and horrible.

Oh, and on the point of homosexuality being bad... I've long felt that christians never read the bible (other than the odd verse here or there suggested by their priest to shore up some point he'd been trying to make). I've noted before the clear celebration of the gay marriage of David to Jonathan (one of the rare pleasant bits in the old testament):

1 Samuel 18:1-4 - "And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword and to his bow and to his girdle."

The standard response is that they are making themselves allies, but that clearly isn't so if you read the surrounding passages, and I had completely forgotten about the later bit where David and Jonathan had to part ways for a while:

20:41...and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

So tell me again why the hardline christians think the bible is anti-gay?
