I've been watching the first and second seasons of Doctor Who over the past week and have just seen the episode "Love and Monsters". What a wonderful, funny story. I loved its fast pacing and lighthearted, offbeat humor interleaved with shades of tragedy. I heartily recommend it. I'm no real fan of Dr Who because the series too often becomes what I dislike most about some forms of science fiction -- the hero worship, the fantasy masquerading as SF, and the mindless love of technology barely papering over irrational fear of it. But this particular episode displays a healthy ability to laugh at itself without being condescending towards the people. The fallible, fragile people at the center of the story are lovingly portrayed. Very nicely done.
