get rid of the nukes

There are more than 23,000 nuclear weapons in the world and another 13 countries on the verge of becoming part of the perverse nuclear club. We need to stop this.

The US-Russian nuclear pact signed by President Obama and President Medvedev is a beginning, but we need to keep pushing. If we don't get rid of nuclear weapons then the chance that they will get used again increases with every passing day. That is a possibility too terrible to allow. When a single weapon can obliterate a large city or a small country then these obscene devices can not be tolerated. It is utterly insane to think that these vile things could ever have any legitimate use. The don't discriminate between good or bad people, children or old people, dangerous or benign -- they just slaughter millions at the push of a button.

We must keep the pressure on our stupid politicians and make them realise that nothing short of eliminating these nightmares will do.

Sign Avaaz's petition at http://www.avaaz.org/en/together_for_zero/

Avaaz has a good track record of keeping pressure on politicians to do the right thing. By presenting petitions signed by hundreds of thousands of people they make politicians aware that their actions are being watched by large numbers, so they can't get away with thinking that they can let some bad things slide because nobody will notice.

i was so happy when i heard this news. and you know what? a lot of republicans in america are freaking out about it, of course. the idiots keep saying that we're leaving ourselves unarmed and ASKING other countries to attack us. fox news (the notoriously biased republican station) actually said "i think this is an IQ test for the american public!"

um.

and the best part? all of the republicans idolize the late president reagan. and guess what? he's the first one to introduce a "get rid of nukes" pact. people are so selfish here. they have no compassion for the rest of the world and find it impossible to understand why OUR nuclear program can incite others to increase THEIR nuclear program. but in reality, if these people were living in any other country but america, they would probably be the ones pushing for their country to develop their nuclear programs. ugh.

It certainly is a step in the right direction.

I am revolted that an Australian runs Fox news -- one of the most morally bankrupt and socially damaging news networks in the world.

I didn't know that Reagan was the one who began nuclear disarmament. It kinda makes sense though. Those who think that "he who has the most killing toys wins" don't seem to realise that a weapon that you can't use is quite literally useless.

As you say, nuclear weapons just encourage other, similarly short-sighted belligerants, to get nukes too, and that's just what we don't need: more aggressive people who can't think clearly having them.
