Internet banking fraud alert
Apr. 11th, 2003 08:02 pmA friend just emailed me and many other friends with this info today because he hasn't yet heard anything about it in news broadcasts, despite having confirmed the situation with his own bank.
Here is what he had to say:
This morning I received an email purporting to be from the ANZ Internet banking section advising me that a security update needed to be applied to my internet banking connection.Be careful. There are a lot of bottom feeders out there. I must say it is a bit disturbing that the banks won't alert their customers, and that the wonderful mass-media who assault us daily with war propaganda show no desire to service us with helpful news.On casual inspection something didn't quite seem right so I took a closer look.
The email is an attempt at fraud.
It provides a link to a perfect copy of the ANZ log in screen but its actually offshore somewhere.
If I had used the Log In screen as instructed I would have given them my Account AND password details.
I immediately rang ANZ who confirmed it was a fraud, and knowing that they would be in no rush to publicise I also rang the local ABC News who told me its also happening with Commonwealth Bank customers.
I am pretty sure that if you Log on as normal everything should be OK simply DONT follow any similar instruction in an email UNLESS you verify with you bank first.
