Game of Thrones
Jan. 30th, 2012 03:23 pmI was told by a friend several days ago to watch the series "Game of Thrones", but was doubtful at the time because I don't particularly enjoy medieval period pieces, or fantasy, and I especially have no great love for fantasies set in medieval-style worlds. Well I was wrong. Game of Thrones is just brilliant! It is sumptuously beautiful, darkly complex, with multi-faceted characters, and full of the kind of intrigue and backstabbing that I normally find so off-putting in many stories. Yet here I am, having watched episode 7 this morning and hardly able to wait for episode 8. I'm trying to pace myself because unfortunately there are only 10 episodes in the first season. And the next season doesn't begin til April. The meagre number is more than made up for by the gorgeous production. The set design often has much owing to some of my favorite artists, John William Godward, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and Maxfield Parrish. At times the beauty is breathtaking. At other times the violence is gut-churning.
I will definitely have to buy this on DVD for permanent archive. I hope it isn't marketed through Sony, because that is one of the few things that would prevent me buying it. I've had difficulty playing their DVDs before because of all the stupid "copy protection" on them, and would be reluctant to risk my scarce funds.
