Anybody know of any good writing LJ communities? The ones I've seen in the past either get stifled by rules or just fade away.

Hey Mims,

Did a check on line by google came up with 14 sites.
if you want them all do a google check and they will tell you where to go. It also gave me some interesting AI places to go look at.

Oh my gosh! Brilliant idea! Now why didn't I think of that? I use Google for searching everywhere except inside LJ and was stumped at the lack of a useful communities search tool within LJ. Many, many thanks Jenna!

By AI do you mean Artificial Intelligence?

Hope you and Bunnie are well and happy.

Hi sweetie :)
You are not dumb!!!
It took me a long time to find stuff about the communities. For ages I didn't even know they even existed.
http://www.livejournal.com/community/community_promo/
is a place to find a list of communities that people are promoting, but it isn't an exhaustive list of LJ communities (I don't know if such a list even exists -- if you find one can you let me know?).

OK. Download this zip file (http://members.optushome.com.au/miriame1/emoticons.zip) and unzip it to somewhere on your computer. The emoticons page in there will be what you want. You need all the little emoticon pics in the zip file as well so that you can see the images on the example page so unzip it all and keep all the parts in their proper folders.

There ya go!

Hiya

I am not really sure why you posted those links to me (I was actually looking for writing communities), but I am really, really glad you did!

The [livejournal.com profile] darkpinupgirls one is very useful for me because I had a terrible time trying to draw the pic of Medusa and her sweetie. I have only drawn dark women a few times before and find it very difficult. I should do it more often though because I find them a meltingly beautiful part of humankind.

The [livejournal.com profile] babyart community is just wonderful I shall have to keep dipping into it in the future. It is a weird and tantalising spice. I think I'll try to capture some of that feel in future pics. Did you suggest that community because Medusa looks very like a child in my pic? It is one of the (several) aspects of my drawing I felt was a mistake and was going to correct... now I am of two minds...

Thanks protokol_4

It's not an LJ community, but this is a great writing community.

At first, I was quite lost in there, trying to find my way around. It really didn't take long though.

It has writing classes, from which all the transcripts are posted.

Lots of other educational stuff too. That's where I got most of the information to help me create the "Shadows" outline. There is also a lot of information on world building.

There is a place to post chapters for critiques.

There are monthly challenges. (I've only been there for one...that was the story-a-day challenge which was really cool)

The writing dares kept me plugging away at my keyboard.

It's free to join if you want. Most of the information can be obtained just viewing as a guest. (you can also post messages and responses as a guest)

Anyway, here's the link to the home page:

Forward Motion

And a link to the Main Community Board - because I still have trouble getting to the main community from the home page. :D From here, you can scroll to the bottom of the screen, there will be a box that lists the other boards.

Hey Jenna,

You might be interested in Alice (see links below). It is an AI that you can download and use for free. You probably already know that there are 2 main kinds of AI:
(1) tricky programs, often called expert systems, that are designed to seem smart. They often use databases of info for responding to queries
(2) neural nets that really are smart (at least potentially) but which need to be painstakingly taught like a baby.

Alice is a type of expert system -- it uses a special language to program it to have responses that can look smart.

http://alice.sunlitsurf.com (this is the main site)
http://alicebot.org/ (this is kinda the same but with a different look)
http://savannah.nongnu.org/download/bang/ (Alice for the Palm here, if you have a little Palm computer)

Neural nets have the most potential for the future, but their development is still in the early stages.

If you want info on neural nets let me know and I'll send you some. :)
