tried to read myself to sleep last night

Note to self: don't read Michael Crichton suspense stories when trying to get sleepy. The fear and adrenalin ensure wakefulness. Damn!

What's the best VR client for Mac OS X?

I'm not sure (I don't have a Mac), but if you are asking about VRML then Parallelgraphics' Cortona http://www.parallelgraphics.com might be worth a look.
You might be able to get the old Mac version of CosmoPlayer to run in OSX. http://ca.com/cosmo
Or considering the close relation of OSX to Unix perhaps check out the 2 opensource projects FreeWrl http://www.crc.ca/FreeWRL and OpenVRML http://www.openvrml.org

I have some friends who develop VRML on Macs, so I can put you in touch with them if you need.

If you aren't referring specifically to VRML then you might want to check out the incredible http://www.3dengines.de there are 643!!! 3d engines listed there.

If you want to learn more about VRML then the Web3d consortium http://web3d.org has a lot of info online, including the complete, downloadable specifications for VRML (basically a manual) at http://web3d.org/fs_specifications.htm After downloading, it unzips to be a book in html format. Also the wonderful book by Rikk Carey and Gavin Bell Annotated VRML 2.0 Reference Manual is at http://www.web3d.org/resources/vrml_ref_manual/Book.html

Hope this helps. :)

If you need more info don't hesitate to contact me. I will be a little hard to get in touch with over the next week because I'm moving house interstate, but the following week I should be back online.
