It is amazing that in the 21st century the vatican continues to sow hatred and prejudice against gays. As rpeate details in his LJ, they have published documents to the effect that gays have no biological value and it is the duty of govenments to make them second class citizens. They try to back up their bigotry with absurd claims.

In saying that same-sex couples perform no biological function they must have a very blinkered reading of scientific literature or never had contact with the rest of the natural world because they haven't noticed that every intelligent species studied has gay members. Dogs, cats, lions, goats, geese, horses, cattle, dolphins... homosexuality is very natural. There are well known examples of gay couplings having some great biological use. The description by Conrad Lorenz of a pair of male wild geese detailed one such example. Geese mate for life and display deep emotional attachment and joy in their relationship. A female goose was very attracted to one of the males and whenever the males would couple sexually she would insert herself between them. The babies resulting from this coupling were very well raised, being cared for by a mother and two fathers. This was a very successful family.

The vatican reports even lie to justify their hate, saying that "experience has shown" that children of gay couples are damaged by their upbringing and that for this reason such people should not be allowed to raise children. They have clearly never met children of gay couples. The ones I've met have generally been happy, well adjusted, and (the vatican would be surprised to learn) heterosexual.

When they use their narrow defining of non-biologically productive people to demote gays to beneath the rest of humanity they conveniently ignore their own celibate priests, bishops, popes, etc who are even less productive of children than gays. They also ignore the terrible impact of the priesthood upon children as a group prone to pedophilia.

In dismissing about a tenth of our population as having no value they are encouraging a worse repression of a minority group than the Nazis did.

My theory is that they hate gay people because, you know, that's what gay people did way back when. Become monks and nuns. And really conservative Catholics probably still do. The Church is like that guy from American Beauty--a big gay homophobe who hasn't come out of the closet yet.

Now there is an interesting theory. You could have something there Keith. I've heard of real-world cases where extreme homophobia was displayed by closeted gays in deep self-denial.

I don't think its that profound of a theory. Its pretty basic psychology that most people often develop deep seated hatreds of things in others that they are uncomfortable with in themselves. I had a great article on this topic once that centered mostly on abortion but also applied to homophobia, but unfortunately I've since lost it.

And besides, I actually know a few bisexual girls from conservative Christian families who grew up very anti-gay (including my ex girlfriend). It was deep-seated denial. Granted, my personal experience says nothing about what generally occurs, but whether it applies to most homophobic people or not, it does in fact happen.
