Oh my... the awesome majesty of the Whirlpool galaxy as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. And here is a bigger, clearer, more mind-blowing image:

I came across it in an article by Steven Soter called Where is Everybody? at Universe Today

It examines Fermi's Paradox, and and why it seems there are no intelligent signals out there when you'd think that with countless stars, even an extremely low probability of civilisations would yield many of them.

Oh, the arrogance! If we cannot detect it, it must not exist!

I love the picture. What is the dark stuff: stuff, or absence of stuff?

Dust and gas.

:) I don't know that I'd call it arrogance. Just trying to understand, I guess. [livejournal.com profile] t3dy's reply to my posting (http://www.livejournal.com/community/astronomy/325598.html) of this to the [livejournal.com profile] astronomy community hits it on the nose I think. It is a beautiful response.
