Oh yeah, Islam has really come a long way in the last 2,000 years. Very mature. The epitome of a loving, caring religion. If allah exists she must be very embarrassed by the way these dickheads are carrying on.

You seen the cartoons the Danish newspaper published? Not very offensive are they. Were you puzzled as to how those pictures elicited death threats for the cartoonists and rioting as far abroad as New Zealand? It seems those pictures were published ages ago and caused hardly a ripple, then recently some jerk-off imam got ahold of some obscene cartoons from heaven knows where that had not been published and showed them around. Viola! Instant indignation... except that all the mindless fools doing the rioting and fatwa-ing got it completely wrong.

Oh religion is such a wonderful thing.

Ages ago being September 30.

The Iman was from the UK (IIRC), and put together a booklet of images (including those ones, and the infamous BBC pig photo), and is now feeling very sheepish.

Anyway, all of this is (apparently) being stirred up by the Saudis.

Thanks. I didn't realise it was 5 months ago. Still, that is a long time in the media.

I think some Saudi moslems might be at the heart of this, but I doubt that the people at the top of Saudi society want it. I think they have unwittingly caused it by unjustified imprisonment and torture of people and keeping their people poor while they swim in riches, but they would not be happy with these uprisings. They are powerless to stop it. If they try to repress their people even more then they worsen the problem. If they let it go ahead unchecked then (at least in the short term) it also gets worse.

John Howard ought to take note of what happens when you allow an elite super-rich class to develop at the expense of the workers and what happens when extreme law-and-order measures are taken, like imprisonment without cause and state-sanctioned torture.

It is a shame religon is such a dirty word. There are nutters in all "religons" Islam is no exception. If Christ was depicted in a defamatory way and plastered around the papers I am sure underworld Catholics would find a "quiet " way of removal. You just have to look at the Da Vinci Code to see what an uproar that caused. Each generation also seams to target another race to kick around. Power hungry insecure zelots The whites of the world seam to take the eleitist road {don`t get me wrong I am white Australian} but you only have to look back through history to see power hungry whites eradicating peoples "just because".

But how could religion be anything but a dirty word? The sooner it becomes generally seen to be what it really is then the sooner the human race can leave this childish, scary part of history behind it.

Most of the truly big despicable things come from religion and from greed.

(Incidentally I class patriotism and racism with religion as something accepted as a faith without facts to support it and often racism and patriotism are so closely interwoven with christianity or islam or hinduism that they are essentially inseparable.)

I only recently saw the original article pictures in wikipedia. Not much to get upset about, from a western perspective anway, since we see far worse on a regular basis.
