another GetUp campaign
Aug. 12th, 2006 08:58 amThis time it will not only deluge the politicians with mail but put a message in the sky using a sky-writing airplane.
When the hell did we become the bad side? Now we might be adding to our human abuses by setting up prison ships offshore where refugees (and anyone else inconvenient) can be incarcerated, away from the prying eyes of journalists and the public. These floating prisons will cost many, many millions of dollars to begin and to operate, so it is definitely not an economically effective scheme. And it opens itself to all kinds of casual horror. Children and other innocents will be held there.
How could we let ourselves become so deeply nasty? We need to get some honesty and morality into our politicians. It would be nice to be able to begin to hold our heads up in the international arena again instead of being clouded by the constant shame of the dirty deeds Australia is involved in now.
You can make a difference. You are not too busy to sign a letter (and even add a few words if you feel like it). It only takes a few seconds. (More than 88 thousand have already done so on this topic.) GetUp has really been making a difference. For example, the legislation to steal Australian Aboriginal land has been delayed and may actually get defeated because of a very successful campaign by many thousands of people through GetUp. So do something good.
