Eddie Izzard... missed by this much...
Apr. 7th, 2004 11:14 amSeems Eddie Izzard was in the running to become the new Dr Who. I reckon he would have made a great Dr. He lost to Christopher Eccleston, who worked alongside Nicole Kidman in the film The Others. From what little I've read about it so far it seems the new Dr Who may be a lot darker and more serious than previous ones. The BBC are spending £1 million per episode -- more than they've ever spent on any drama. I love science fiction, but I've never really been a great fan of Dr. Who... though I remember enjoying the very first episodes starring William Hartnell.
It will be interesting to see how this comes off. The massive, rather obsessive fan-base risks sabotaging any attempt to breathe fresh life into the show. Oddly, they are actually attached to the string-and-cardboard sets and the two-dimensional scripts. The recent one-off movie tried to bring more flash and cool to the dusty series. I thought it did so remarkably well, but a lot of fans hated it.
