We automatically assume that most people who show empathy towards someone is of good heart, they just want to show that they are on someone's side. The fact is what you said, those are the ones that are infinitely more dangerous, more manipulative in some cases.

Date: 2007-11-28 10:12 am (UTC)Yes, I've often felt annoyed that books and movies portray people who lack empathy so wrongly. The psychopaths in movies are generally almost impossible. Much more scary are people like Hitler who had empathy. He adored his girlfriend, loved dogs, and was a vegetarian, but in spite of all that, he was able to skilfully manipulate people's feelings and bring about the murder of millions of Jews, colored people, and gays.
Autistic people lack an ability to empathise, but are virtually always harmless, often highly talented people, who are hopelessly confused by all the subtle social signals we take for granted.
