Dr Who

I've been watching the first and second seasons of Doctor Who over the past week and have just seen the episode "Love and Monsters". What a wonderful, funny story. I loved its fast pacing and lighthearted, offbeat humor interleaved with shades of tragedy. I heartily recommend it. I'm no real fan of Dr Who because the series too often becomes what I dislike most about some forms of science fiction -- the hero worship, the fantasy masquerading as SF, and the mindless love of technology barely papering over irrational fear of it. But this particular episode displays a healthy ability to laugh at itself without being condescending towards the people. The fallible, fragile people at the center of the story are lovingly portrayed. Very nicely done.

You're perhaps the only person I know who liked that episode.

It's widely considered the low point of the new season (within the ep the oral-sex giving slab of concrete is the worst thing), but it's nice to know someone enjoys it.

I have to admit I squirmed a little at the oral sex reference, but I also have to say I chuckled too. On the whole I thought the ep was lighthearted, refreshing, and quite charming. I also enjoyed the way the geeks were portrayed as sweet people.

We need more sweet geeks.

I prefer my geeks salted. :)
