Whisper is such a lovely story. It brings a lump to my throat and often actual tears of happiness to my eyes each time I see it too. So sweet and optimistic! I wish there were more stories like that. I was hoping you'd see something of yourself in the main character. I identify somewhat with her too. So does my niece. I expect most people with artistic leanings would.
Courageous? You are. You're striking out into the unknown to another country to seek your future. I think that's fantastic.
You are wise to steer clear of Fireflies until you are feeling strong and calm. It is an incredibly beautiful story, but the depth of tragedy can be almost overwhelming. You have been warned. :)
My wonderful niece Lois has told me that there is a new Studio Ghibli film out: "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponyo_on_the_Cliff_by_the_Sea

Or better yet visit one of the many superb fan run sites http://www.onlineghibli.com/ http://www.nausicaa.net/
Unfortunately the official Studio Ghibli site in North America seems to have been replaced and redirects to a slow, crappy, bloated Disney site http://www.miyazakimovies.com/
I wish I had her courage with writing. I could never do anything with mine. Two complete novels and I choose to let them sit around for myself and for my friends. I could never dream of publishing.
I hope I can find time for Fireflies at some point. I'm excited to watch it.
Oh, I do love Studio Ghibli! Will have to check those out.
There is time yet. Keep practising and growing. I'm sure you have very cool things in store for you. You'll be ready when the time comes. Who knows what wonderful minds you'll come in contact with in UK. Exciting times ahead!
