poll on asylum seekers -- urgent!

The Age newspaper is conducting a poll:
Do you agree with Tony Abbott's tougher stance on asylum seekers?

You only have tonight to respond, and then it closes.

I voted yes*, for giggles.

* May not be what I actually voted for. I am surprised at which way the vote is tilting.

Hi Graylock,

I am one of Miriam's friends but sadly do not have a LiveJournal account, so please excuse the anonimity of this response. (She knows who I am).

With due respect, I do not believe that Tony Abbott's stance on refugees and asylum seekers is a giggling matter. Do you think that the Holocaust was amusing? Of course not, and most of our international humanitarian laws (including the 1951 Refugee Convention, to which Australia is a state party) were a response to that mass obscenity, and an attempt to ensure that it never repeats on any scale of numbers.

Are you aware of this?:

This may not have the quanititative scope of the Holocaust, but in my opinion, allowing the death of just ONE person (even if by neglect) is an obscenity. I trust that you agree.
