God! I feel like vomiting.
Saw an ad for 60 Minutes (Australian version) where they spoke patriotically of being "damn proud to be an Australian".
Makes me sick to the bottom of my gut!

Patriotism should be a word that triggers wholesale revulsion. It cues propaganda. A person who displays patriotism might as well have a tattoo on their forehead saying "SUCKER". They fly a flag saying "I am open to manipulation; I am ready to join the dark legions."

Patriotism is a baby step away from racism. It is an incredibly dangerous mindset. It is stupid too -- I mean, how can you characterise millions of people as being anything in particular. They are just people... good people, bad people; smart people, stupid people... just people.

People are suckered into patriotism as proof that they are good citizens. But it is a con. Anybody who professes patriotism is either a victim of brainwashing or a dangerous shyster.

I totally agree Miriam. Patriotism is a mechanism of separation, not unity, and while it was possibly useful in the process of evolution of human consciousness it is now time to leave it behind. It has always been an excuse for atrocities and the way people are being manipulated through it into supporting the present wave of aggression and murder is nothing new. It is time now for a new and universal acceptance.
