my website is down for renovation
Friday, 22 August 2014 08:31 amIf you happen to visit my website over the next 4 or 5 days you'll find it is inaccessible. That's because I'm currently shifting to a better service provider.
When everything is back up, it will still be at the same address, though some of the items in the site will have changed position because I'm taking the opportunity to reorganise things more logically too.

Actually, if I'd realised there was a problem with my account, my site would still be open and available and I probably wouldn't be moving just now. I've been unhappy at the cost/value of GoDaddy for a while. They used to be great value for money, but have begun to lag badly. I'd considered closing my account with them and switching to another host for some time. Normally my account is renewed automatically, but I'd forgotten to update the new expiry date on my debit card so the payment wasn't attempted. My fault, but they didn't email me to say there was a problem so when I tried to access my site and it was closed I puzzled for a couple of minutes, realised the cause, and decided now is the perfect time to move. I could afford to do so right now, but I don't want to leave my bank account low with other things possibly coming out in the meantime. I'll have more money on Tuesday and then I'll pay for an account at http://crazydomains.com.au for 10 years. That's roughly just 1.5 years of what I was paying at GoDaddy.com, while giving me far more space and some other other advantages. When the introductory (bait) price goes up to the standard price after 10 years, the yearly price will still be less than half what I've been paying at GoDaddy.

I didn't know they were in favor of internet censorship and killing elephants. I always had the nagging feeling there was something not quite right about GoDaddy. They seem to host a lot of spammers and scammers, though that may be simply because they used to have very low prices compared to other hosters.
