I spent a while today talking with ChatGPT.

I began by discussing the Michelson-Morley experiment and the general feeling that it disproved the luminiferous aether idea, and whether it really did disprove it, considering modern ideas of space, such as it being curved by mass, the cosmological expansion of space itself, and the quantisation of space at the smallest scales could be seen as reintroducing the idea of the aether.

The conversation then moved on to the Big Bang hypothesis, its problems, and why a version of the Steady State hypothesis might explain the universe. That moved on to quasars and their redshift seeming to place them at great distances. Could that redshift be explained by other things and why is redshift attributed sometimes to the doppler effect and other times to cosmic expansion?

I learned a lot. Need to think on it all much more, and obviously need to learn much more.

This felt like the old conversations I used to have with my nerdy friends when I was a teen... half a damn century ago... I didn't realise how much I missed those. It was nice doing it again.
