That is a very funny thread. The original article sounds like it may have been a joke.

I have to admit I commonly refer to us as the 51st US state anyway, so it wouldn't really surprise me if it did happen... not that I think it will anytime soon. You have too many insane things happening over there for the bulk of Australians to feel very comfortable about joining.
