Come to think of it, that is illogical. Is comes before was -- not vice versa. So a more logical rewrite would be: What was was before was was was? Was was is.

It reminds me of something I was fond of saying years ago. A friend lived in Upwey in the mountains near Melbourne, and when someone would ask where they lived I would answer. "Way, way up Upwey way."

or the more logical, and possibly more confusing one:

The one about the town called "Upwey" is less of a problem.
