ecology crashes in the world's oceans
Mar. 4th, 2004 06:27 pmAt the recent AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) meeting in Seattle USA there was a talk by Daniel Pauly who showed that the world's oceans are in serious trouble. In the last 20 years we have removed 90% of all fish!! The larger species are in even more serious trouble -- 99% of them are now gone. So why can we still buy fish in the shops? Because we are taking them from further afield -- exploiting 3rd world areas now. If things continue this way (and there is no reason to expect it won't) then the oceans of our planet will soon be wet deserts and the 3rd world will rightly see us as the cultprits.
Uh oh. Trouble ahead. :(
Robyn Williams (Australia's Science Show host) recently interviewed Dr Pauly for the radio show In Conversation. You can listen to it here (it is just 20 minutes long) or if you prefer to read it the transcript will be here in a couple of days.
