Project Gutenberg was begun by Michael Hart more than 30 years ago when he realised that we risked becoming a world of information-rich and information-poor with an increasingly deep chasm separating the two. He decided that there should be a way of making literature available to all the world and took up the challenge himself. Since then so many people have been inspired by this noble aim that volunteers have converted almost 10,000 books to electronic form. These are mostly books whose copyrights have expired, but some have been donated by their authors.

The project is run on a shoestring and is in constant need of funds to pay for their few staff. Donate a dollar to them and make the world a more equitable (and safer) place and ensure you have a steady stream of free books to read into the forseeable future. Even I can afford a dollar!

Here's how: )

A man who is driving a car is stopped by a police officer. The following exchange takes place....
Man: "What's the problem officer ?"
Officer: "You were going at least 75 in a 55 zone."
Man: "No sir, I was going 65."
Wife: "Oh, Harry. You were going 80."
[Man gives his wife a dirty look.]
Officer: "I'm also going to give you a ticket for your broken tail light."
Man: "Broken tail light ? I didn't know about a broken tail light !"
Wife: "Oh Harry, you've known about that tail light for weeks."
[Man gives his wife a dirty look.]
Officer: "I'm also going to give you a citation for not wearing your seat belt."
Man: "Oh, I just took it off when you were walking up to the car."
Wife: "Oh, Harry, you never wear your seat belt."
Man: [turns to his wife and yells] "Shut your mouth woman !"
Officer: [turns to the woman and asks] "Ma'am, does your husband talk to you this way all the time ?"
Wife: "No, only when he's drunk."

Today is the anniversary of an incredibly evil terrorist act in which thousands of innocent people were killed.

30 years ago the USA assassinated the democratically elected president of Chile and installed the dictator Augusto Pinochet. 5,000 Chileans lost their lives due to U.S. terrorism.

Now, anybody who knows me realises that a very large number of my friends are American citizens. I am not anti-USA. But I do get scared when I think of how the people in power there have built up such a deep bank of resentment against the USA which exposes all my friends to great danger.

All terrorism is evil! There can never be any excuse to justify it.
