Hey, y'know how most legends have some truth at their origin? Well, I have always had this horrible feeling about the legend of Medusa.
Imagine that there is a brilliant woman who creates sculptures. She lives with her sisters (or girlfriends) on an island in the Mediterranean, where she works creating wonderful statues. She is possibly from the African continent and braids her hair with brightly colored string in the manner of some people there.
One day a young adventurer named Perseus, big on muscle, but short on brains, comes to the island, having heard of the legends of the woman-monsters with snakes for hair that dwell there. He believes the silly stories that they can turn people to stone with a look, in fact he sees plenty of "evidence" of it in the many sculptures there.
Medusa is rather amused to see this dumb, young, musclebound clod walking backwards up from the shore toward her looking in the reflection of his shone-up shield... until he decapitates her with a sudden swing of his sword.
The stupid superstitious shit kills a talented sculptress and goes down in history as some kind of hero.

HOW?
Date: 2003-04-21 04:27 pm (UTC)Re: HOW?
Date: 2003-04-21 05:55 pm (UTC)You can use this page (http://members.optushome.com.au/miriame1/emoticons-remote.html) that I made. It points to all the emoticons remotely. It only shows the emoticons while you are online though.
Or much more useful is if you download this (http://members.optushome.com.au/miriame1/emoticons.zip) and unzip it on your computer. It puts all the emoticons locally on your machine so you can use the emoticons-local.html page (included) even when you're not online.
Keep it locally on the computer and when you want to add an emoticon to your postings select the text beside the emoticon you want (drag your mouse over the text to highlight it) then press Ctrl-C on the keyboard to copy the text to the clipboard in the computer. Now put your cursor on the page where you want the cursor to be and press Ctrl-V to paste the contents of the clipboard there. When you view the page later (or preview it) then you will see the emoticon where the img tag got pasted.
Voilà!

Date: 2003-04-21 09:52 am (UTC)Was just curious, ok nosy LOL; and bopped in. I had to comment on this, because it was just too funny, but then sad because it is so very possible. (You have a strange and interesting mind. I like that in a person!)
Anyway, hope you don't mind my bopping in. Feel free to do the same to me if you want. After you reach the Arthritis medicine post, there a will be some Shadows spoilers. So you may want to stop there.
Thought about adding you to my friends list, but wasn't sure how you would feel about that. You can add me to yours if you want. (If you do, I will make sure I don't put any more spoilers in it.)
Jean.

I would reciprocate, but I am a little scared of spoilers... OK, a lot scared of 'em. It is almost impossible for me to scroll past them because my damn eyes take in stuff even when I command them not to. I really want to be the best help I can with the story. When it is complete and you are revising I will add you.
Thanks for the comment about the Medusa thing. I have thought this way about the Medusa legend for many, many years and have decided to finally make it into a short story.
Heheheh. You wanna see strange mind? Look at my drawings. http://werple.net.au/~miriam

Date: 2003-04-21 05:40 pm (UTC)I especially enjoyed: Simone's World, Starry Dream, and Soaps
But I have to admit the VR stuff just simply amazes me. That you all can do that stuff is simply awesome. (and that's based only on the limited info I have)
I see your niece picked up your talent too. For 12, she is really good. Especially the foal and the girl.
Let me know when you finish the Medusa short story, I'd love to read it. BTW - Will you guys take me back into time with you? I can cook! LOL

Date: 2003-04-21 06:14 pm (UTC)VR is simpler than it first seems. Some of the more technical aspects are still a bit hard at the moment, but it is getting easier all the time. Stuff at the cutting edge is always hard at first, then as it gets more mainstream easier ways are found to do it. For example the telephone system is an incredibly complex thing, but anybody can use it now. We no longer need to know anything about the complicated stuff under the surface. When Bell was working on the first telephones it was hard to understand and to use, and that was nowhere near as complex as the phones are now.
Yeah Lois is a sweetie.
She is soooo lucky. Not only is she a talented artist and writer, but she is brilliant at maths too! I so wish I was. I love many of the concepts in maths, but lack the basic ability.
Lois' brother is very smart too. My sisters kids are just amazing!
Heheheh I sound like a doting aunt don't I?
I'll try to write the Medusa story today.
You can cook? Cool! I am hopeless in that area. You are officially invited for any time-travel forays. Heheheheh.

Date: 2003-04-22 10:49 am (UTC)I'm pretty proud of my niece and nephew too. (Just met them for the first time in September...it's a long story I'll tell you some time.)
As for their dad, (big time cop in the LA area..note-NOT an LA cop! He hates them) we have just started to get to know each other too. We've grown close in the past year.
Saw that you enjoyed "Lilo & Stitch," well he was the "Police Consultant" for the picture. (no credit) The two guys who produced it are friends of his. They are working on another animated film and one of the characters may actually be based on him.
Sorry..I have no connections there; just him. I was invited to the opening in Florida, but since I had just changed jobs, I couldn't go. Big bummer! Really big bummer!!!
But when I visited him (our 2nd ever meeting), we had lunch at the Disney Studios. And we even managed to get in to the famous "Club 33" at Disneyland. But actually the highlight of my trip (besides spending time with my big bro) was the 1 1/2 police tour in a helicopter!
